英文摘要 | Two theories reveal for us the difficulties of understanding the world cross-culturally in the context of existing global media power geometry. Edward Said had long pointed out that under the dominant operations where the West owns the interpretations of the East, Orientalism ensues. Internationally, agenda-setting finds global communication often operates in the pattern where the Rest of the world follows the agendas set by the First World media. Under the condition that international news reporting in Taiwan relies heavily on news of international and western media, this study questions whether the news reporting on the necessity and legitimacy of American's invasion of Iraq in 2003 in three major Taiwanese newspapers: Liberty Times, United Daily, and China Times, had followed the agenda-setting of First World media and therefore reproduced Orientalism. Through quantitative statistics on the themes and sources of news, and critical discourse analyses of reports referencing foreign media news, this study found Taiwanese newspapers were indeed influenced by international agenda-setting in reporting the 2003 Iraq War. Taiwanese newspapers heavily relied on Washington Post and New York Times in reporting this story and followed the agendas of both media. Under this cultural dependency, Taiwanese news media took the utterance position of the First World in thinking that Taiwan was in the same position to regard the Islam as "the other." However, Taiwanese newspapers also strived to have Taiwan's own perspective on international issues by sampling more reports from diverse resources and using more reports from Taiwanese correspondents, rather than simply replicating the First World agendas. |
