英文摘要 | This essay examines three aspects of the calligraphic couplets of the Qing dynasty with reference to specimens in the Lechangzai Xuan collection. The first focuses on calligraphies in large characters in various scripts for an objective evaluation of the achievements of Qing calligraphers. The second delves into the phenomenon of assembling characters from steles and model calligraphies for composing couplets, to unravel the Qing penchant for archaism and the close relationship between couplets as a kind of wordplay involving both ancient steles and model calligraphies. The last of the three aspects addresses the courtesy nature of calligraphy. Through a survey of inscriptions on extant works, the circumstances surrounding the presentation of calligraphic couplets as gifts are explored to shed light on the role played by calligraphy in social bonding during the Qing dynasty. |
