英文摘要 | The purpose of this paper is to explore the leftist practices of the Chinese language theatres in the critique of local society in the early years of the Republic of Singapore. This essay provides a review of the existing relevant studies, which somehow neglected the local society of Singapore. Due to the effect of the Great Culture Revolution that happened in China in 1966, Chinese language theatrical groups in Singapore were inclined to be more leftist and they represented the more struggles of social class consciousness. It also involved the critique of the capitalists and the concern for underclass. However, the existing studies claimed that these contents lost its subjectivity and became merely the political tools for political struggle, reached their understanding of the relationship between the theatre and the leftist thoughts through the text and revolution discourse, and thus viewed the theatrical groups were radical and deviated from social reality. Moreover, they could not realize the specific meaning of the texts and discourses in the context of Singapore. Thus, this paper intends to analyze how the Chinese language theatrical groups are concerned about the local society through the process of the dramatic activities. By analyzing the data collected and the creation and process of performance, it also argues that the Chinese language theatres have close connection with the social realities in Singapore despite having the strong leftist features. |
