英文摘要 | This paper recounts the story of a man who came to Taiwan in 1949 during the Chinese Civil War. It is the story of one of those referred to as a ‘Mainlander’ in Taiwan. The title of this paper borrows the words 'Big River Big Sea' to create a contrast with the work of that name. Compared with the people that appeared in Big River Big Sea - Untold Stories from 1949, this man’s life developed within a completely different context and ended with a different conclusion. To this man, the river and sea do not evoke even the slightest romantic feelings. Rather, they represent a kind of rupture: with the land upon which he grew up and spent his youth; in the emotional relationships within his family; and in terms of his sense of self-worth, in which he went from being carefully cared for to being highly neglected. At the same time, a rupture also occurs between his self-identity and childhood memories. The protagonist in this story is the writer’s father. Through the recounting of his personal family experience, and the review and reflection that form a part of that narration, the writer develops a new understanding towards the father. While writing this paper, the writer discovered that, in the strong currents of time, the members of a family each exist within their own individual historical environments, and carry the marks of their own personal life and emotions. Therefore, within a single family, the various members hold unrealistic expectations of one another. The present work aims to use the method of narration to explore the rupture that occurs in the man’s life when, as a child, he experienced war, and the impact this has on his sense of self-worth and his search for meaning in life. Even after establishing his own family, because of the scars left on his life by the war, there is a deepening of unrealistic expectations that family members have towards each other and sometimes result in unfair treatment. The person involved becomes ensnared in what Alfred Adler termed an inferiority complex. Placing all this within an existentialist framework, the paper explores which paths or methods can help those who have experienced a rupture in their lives. It explores in what way these sufferings and difficulties can be transformed into a perspective that provides a sense of meaning to one’s life, and thereby creates the possibility to transform that life. |
