| 英文摘要 | Many urban researchers have maintained that historic preservation is a strategy for contemporary cities to shape unique place images, which are important for attracting tourists or business investments. To East-Asian cities with colonial history, however, viewing historic preservation solely from an economic perspective may overlook the political and cultural meanings of historical landscape. For this reason, the present study aims to investigate the preservation of colonial landscape in Taipei and Hong Kong, in order to understand the role of historic preservation in identity politics. Through case studies of “Capital Core District” , “Capital Plaza Redesign”, Leseng and Sanatorium preservation movement in Taipei, and Hong Kong Museum of History, Pinsang Historical Trial, and preservation movement of Star Ferry Pier and Queen Pier in Hong Kong, this study finds that the interpretation and representation of colonial landscape in Taipei and Hong Kong is related to the identity building project initiated by various social actors. The colonial landscape preservation programs led by the state tend to make places of national memory, which can strengthen the legitimacy of the ruling power; in contrast, the colonial landscape preservation movements triggered by resisting urban redevelopment tend to make places of social memory, which can enhance collective identities based on the principle of citizen participation, human rights and justice. In a world of de-territorialization, both historic preservation projects can be considered as strategies of re-territorialization for various social actors, and the tension between them will exist perpetually. |
