英文摘要 | The Teacher's Research Community at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages was established in 2014. It aims to compare and contrast the linguistic aspects of languages. Hence, it is mulitilingual in mature. Sixteen teachers, graduate school students, and Ph. D. program students are invited to discuss topics related to theoretical as well as applied linguistics regularly. On top of the interaction among the participants, a social networking website, Facebook, is also built as a platform ofr connection and opinion sharing. Moreover, some schloars are invited to make academic lectures. This technical report is based on the study of onomatopoeia. By definition, onomatopoeia is the coinage of new words by imitating sounds they describe. English and Chinese are used as the parameters for the report. The languages empolyed in the report include English, Chinese, German, French, Spanish, Solvenskijezik, Japanese and Taiwanese. In terms of denotative meanings, phonological processes, and word formation, fifty words in Chinese are finally selected for the comparison. Some major findings are as follows: (A)Onomatopoeia is a universal linguistic phenomenon as human beings have the competence to imitate sounds surrounding them. (B)Unlike alphabetic languages such as English, German, and French, Chinese is ideographic and thus unalphabetic. Therefore, the onomatopoeia in Chinese may be derived by phonetic associations or phonograms. (C)Since onomatopoeia is a kind of sound symbolism, it is considered to be phonologically similar among the languages under discussion. However, quite a lot of differences have also been discovered. The reasons for the variation range from the differences in the origianl phonetic system, the limitation of the acoustic nature in the language to the psychological reality of the speakers and the social development of the language, particularly in the disappearance and emergence of certain phonetic units. These factors may result in the onomatopoeic discrepancy among the eight languages. |
