英文摘要 | Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of patients presenting as emergencies in a medical center emergency department in Taiwan during the year 2013. Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients with dental complaints who visited the ED of Linkuo Medical Center of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (LMCCGMH) in 2013 was conducted. Information regarding age, gender, time, day, and month of visits, diagnosis and treatment was collected and analyzed. Results: 1198 patients with dental problems attended the ED of LMC CGMH. The male -to-female ratio was 1.3 :1.0. The age distribution peak was at 20 to 29 years. The number of visits peaked in February (164 people, 13.7%), on Sundays (15.6%), and between 11 PM and 12 PM (7.7%). The reasons for ED visits were as follows: orodental trauma, pulp-related problems, periodontal-related problems, odontogenic infection and postoperative complications. Conclusions: At their attendance as an emergency, 24.5% patients presented with pulpal problems, 22.2% with periodontal diseases. While some dental emergencies are unavoidable, this study highlights the need for more effective implementing oral health preventive strategies to lessen the reliance on dental emergency care for common preventable dental conditions. |
