英文摘要 | There was no blood-shedding of any kind before the Boxer Uprising took place in Shansi Province. Nor were there any large-scale anti-Christianity and Exclusionism movements ever to be found there. After assuming the post as provincial governor of Shanxi, Chen Chun Shen started to ask for more civil servant recruitments, hoping to quickly arrive at an agreement in order to consequently cement diplomatic relationships. Because the churches in Shanxi had suffered great loss, in order to help Shansi prevent itself from falling into the hands of other nations, governor Chen tried whatever he could to ensure the safety of the foreign survivors, give relief to uprising-affected Chinese Christians, and maintain social stability. Nevertheless, severe penalties and the tremendous amount of forfeit money were too much for a single province like Shansi. How would governor Chen deal with them? These therefore have become the main focus for this research. With respect to the feedback, Chen had made good use of the influence from Rev. Richard Timothy, which resulted in the establishment of Shansi University. Enormous in scale and far-fetching in influence, the university has become the model of education for other provinces. Except for the government officials and local rich, students from shansi University, Shansi Armaments School, Police Academy, Teacher’s school, Commerce & Mining School, Police Academy, and Agriculture & Forestry School also signed a petition demonstrating the pros and cons, denouncing the inappropriateness in the renewed Sino-British joint-mining contract as well as demanding a way to redeem rights of mining in Shansi. In general, the overwhelming demand from the students and the cooperation from the officials and the rich had made the reclaim of mining rights possible. The students and the rich in Shansi had contributed the most. The students rationally engaged in protests, speeches, and meetings, and with the support money from the businessmen in Shansi, the redeeming process went smoothly and successfully. |
