英文摘要 | CHIANG SHIH-CHE, invited by his friend SHAO YU-LIEN who was the Taiwan Governor-General in late Qing Dynasty, visited Taiwan to compile the “Annals of Taiwan.” Mr. Chiang was a royal traveling scholar who wrote the book Taiwan Tour Diary with his experiences in Taiwan. The book recorded the aspects such as the political and economic situations, the local customs in Taiwan in late 19th century, the prosperous commercial activities due to harbors opening after Sino-French War, the imperial examination system, culture and education, medicine and dietetic hygiene. The author of this paper uses the book as a clue reference and tries to investigate and to dig out the truth about the medicine and dietetic hygiene in Taiwan before Japanese invasion, the life nurturing concepts and health knowledge of the royal traveling scholar, and the medical and cultural issues revealed in this study. The specific aims of this study will focus on two main points: firstly, the foreign land with tropical diseases attributed to miasma and relevant medical care and, secondly, sanitary and hygiene knowledge. First of all, it is necessary to mention Mr. Chiang’s life nurturing concepts, “restricting diets and caring living.” He pointed out, in particular, the relationships between customs, dietetic styles and folk habits. He also tried to link tropical diseases attributed to miasma in Taiwan and the customs of debauchery together to explain the cause of the diseases. It reflected an ancient and deeply implanted Chinese traditional geographic bias. Secondly, with the descriptions of stench and dirtiness in Tainan City written by Mr. Chiang, this paper tries to study the issues about urban environments and public health with Chinese medical theories. Finally, by using Japanese military physician Ochiai Taikura’s Zheng-Man-Yi-Zhi in Meiji Seven as a reference, this study compares two things: the life nurturing and health care concepts between Taiwan and Japan before Japanese Invasion of Taiwan (in 1895), as well as the difference between the Taiwanese images built up with Chinese and Western medical knowledge systems. |
