英文摘要 | This paper intends to study the rather intricate and fluid embodiment of identity and subjectivity in Wai-lim Yip’s (1937-) poetry pitched against the shift of dominance from modernism, native-turfed ocalism/ realism to post-modernism/ post-colonialism taking place in the Taiwan/ ROC literary arena from the mid-fifties to the early-nineties of the last century. While focusing on a discussion of Yip’s poetry, primarily for significant comparison, I will also touch upon the coterie he has associated himself with since he first arrived in Taiwan in 1955, as well as the poet DominicCheung (1943-), also from Hong Kong and almost of the same stature. Any audience familiar with the poetry of both Yip and Cheung will instantaneously discern the following salient features of the Chinese diasporas: loneliness, discontinuity, rootlessness, alienation, nostalgia, decentering, marginality, veering towards extinction, etc. The hybridized identity and multiple/ fluid subjectivities seem to be a key, a knife to cut through the parameters of theirdiasporas in this era of post-isms. This essay also hopes to argue that Yip should be given due acclaim amidst the clashes of ideology, political correctedness, and the re-writing of modern Taiwan/ Chinese history of literature (poetry). |
