英文摘要 | Among opera series of the Eight Immortals performed by Ming Hwa Yuan, “Peng Lai the Immortal” which interprets the story of Iron-Clutch Li has been performed for the longest period of time and is the most representative work. The nature of legends of Eight Immortals which have been widely spread among the people belongs to Taoist belief. The themes of plays performed after the Yuan Dynasty were also mainly people becoming immortals or people going up to heaven, which reflected deep religious meanings. At first glance, the materials, plot content, and character arrangement, etc. of Ming Hwa Yuan’s “Peng Lai the Immortal” are similar to the story about how Iron-Clutch Li became an immortal performed traditionally. In fact, there are significant differences between them. Generally speaking, the screenwriter adopted the legend materials with original religious feature, and used the re-arrangement of plots and characters to state the philosophy of life “an army puffed up with pride is bound to lose.” Under this arrangement, the original theme of the world of the immortals was transformed into the philosophy of the world of the mortals. Therefore, “Peng Lai the Immortal” is not a traditional play demonstrating the world of the immortals, but a modern Taiwanese opera creation. This study focused on the plots and themes in order to analyze and compare the content of Taoist legend and this play, as well as to investigate the mechanism and meaning of the transformation. |
