英文摘要 | One of the unique characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is that the herbs must be processed before use. The processing of herbs is called "pao zhi" in Chinese. Since most Chinese herbs are from raw natural materials, processing is essential to meet therapeutic requirements. Herb processing has a history of approximately 3000 years, comprised of miscellaneous methods and procedures. Modern research has shown that medicinal properties as well as ingredients of herbs can be changed after processing; some are lost while some emerge. The purposes of processing medicinal herbs include modifying drug property, promoting therapeutic effect, removing or reducing toxicity to ensure safety and producing satisfactory medicinal effect in clinical practice. Therefore the step of processing has dramatic impact on TCM clinical treatment. However, even in the market today, it is not uncommon to find TCM herbs of varying qualities. Inconsistency of TCM herb processing will result in dramatic differences in their qualities, which in turn seriously effect clinical treatment. With the combination of knowledge accumulated over past centuries and modern technology, it is possible to build standardized processing or referencing methods to insure the quality of decoction pieces sold in Taiwan. In this project, scholars and experts in related fields and TCM industry representatives are invited to form a committee. The committee will be responsible to choose 200 commonly used or toxic Chinese crude drugs. For these 200 crude drugs, a “Practical Guide for the Processing of Common TCM Crude Drugs in Taiwan” will be compiled based on recent pharmacopeias, materia medicas from successive dynasties, monographs and scientific studies related to Chinese crude drug processing, as well as practical experience from TCM masters, advanced pharmaceutical manufacturers and Chinese crude drug pharmacies of major hospitals. The framework and content compilation of the book will be entirely monitored and inspected by the committee to ensure accurate information. Finally, the “Practical Guide for the Processing of Common TCM Crude Drugs in Taiwan” will be published and printed to provide reference to workmen in the fields of Chinese medicine and herbal industry. The “Practical Guide for the Processing of Common Crude Drugs in Taiwan” will be printed fully in color, divided into 20 chapters which will comprehensively cover commonly used processing methods and equipments, including but not limited to: discarding various substances to make the herbs clearn, cutting and breaking into small pieces, dissolving effective components into a liquid substance, sir-frying, steaming, quenching, fermenting, etc. For each and every crude drug, practical experience and modern research results are narrated with detailed descriptions and photographs. Finally, the “Practical Guide for the Processing of Common TCM Crude Drugs in Taiwan” will be published and printed to provide reference to workmen in the fields of Chinese medicine and herbal industry on the processing sequence and quality standard of Chinese crude drugs to ensure uniformity of TCM decoction pieces and push forward good manufacturing of processing (GMP) standardization in Taiwan. The ultimate aims of this project are to guarantee the quality and decrease toxicity of processed TCM products, and to ensure the safety and clinical efficacy for the treatment of patients. |
