英文摘要 | A simple and quite cost-effective sampling system for 14C in biological samples or radwastes from nuclear power plant was designed, which can collect 14C using a CO2 absorption technique. The approach was to place the sample in a quartz tube inside the furnace in a flowing stream of oxygen and then heat the tube to high temperatures. The function of CuO was used downstream for catalytic oxidation from the initial ”combustion” zone to ensure that any CO resulted from possible incomplete combustion of the sample carbon present in the gas stream could be oxidized to CO2. The dilute sulfuric acid (5%) was utilized for steam absorption during the process. The collection technique also provided a simple procedure of the subsequent sample preparation for activity measurement by liquid scintillation counter (LSC). In addition, the trapping design in combination of several counting vials could solve the over-capacities of carbon absorption of each collector, which made the following sample pre-treatment of counting easier. The minimum detectable activity (MDA) was 20 mBq/g for solid sample, 1g. The sensitivity would be on an acceptable level for routine monitoring of radwastes at nuclear facilities. |
