英文摘要 | In this study, I aim to explore the potential of posthuman ethics in Bruno Latour’s idea of Collective, which was mainly developed in three of his books: We Have Never Been Modern, Politics of Nature, and Reassembling the Social. Investigating Latour’s dissatisfaction with modernity, I aim to point out the deanthropocentric turn he takes to add on the possibility of an alternative ethics which is friendly to nonhuman agents. His explication of a Non-modern Constitution can contribute not only to the development of an eco-friendly ethics which is not based on the system of reason, the hallmark of modernity, but also to the interdisciplinary study of the environment and literature. Therefore, I would like to advance an experimental reading of Yann Martel’s Life of Pi through Latour’s theory. Given that Latour’s Actor-Network-Theory (ANT) tends toward a material-based discussion, I would like to show that the potential of posthuman ethics in his writings would become even more explicit through an application to the reading of Pi. My essay will be divided into three sections: in the first part, I discuss Latour’s critique of modernity and the potential of posthuman ethics in his concept of Collective. In the second section, the modern zoo will be discussed through Latour’s ANT. In the final section, I will read Yann Martel’s "Life of Pi" through Latour’s view in order to explicate a new ethics of co-existence. |
