英文摘要 | This paper deals with the Mei(Bai)-fan, an extinct Austronesian people of Puli plain. Paying an attention to a portrait of half-blood children photographed by TORII Ryuzo, the author tries to reveal the process of extinction of this ethnic group and to search the destiny of their descendants. This investigation is based on the analysis of the historical literatures and old contractual documents of Qing dynasty, alongwith field-researchers’ records and family resister during the colonial period. As a result of this investigation, it becomes clear that current Taiwanese surname ‘Mei’ is traced back to a half-blood Mei-fan boy whom TORII photographed on a dry plate. |
