| 英文摘要 | Yang Hui (about 1238-1298) is a mathematician in the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, he used the term “Zong Heng Tu” to call magic squares in his book Hsii-ku chai-chi suan-fae (1275). Since then, “Zong Heng Tu” had been recorded in mathematic books in the later dynasties. The historian of mathematics Schuyler Cammann (1912-1991) suggests that this change was due to the influence of Arabic magic squares, but it does not convince me. So the main goal of this paper is to explore whether Hsii-ku chai-chi suan-fae contained Arabic mathematics or not. I try to analyze Yang Hui’s background, the construction of the magic squares, and the concept of universe in his books, also compare “Zong Heng Tu” with Arabic magic squares in the identical period, in order to get reasonable explanation. |
