英文摘要 | Among the contemporary American writers, Gary Snyder (1930-) is known for his “multiculturalism.” His childhood experiences on the farmland lay the foundation for his ecological thought. Later on, he keeps absorbing the cultures of the American Indians and Asia. Among Asian cultures, Chinese culture and Japanese culture influence Snyder the most. As a member of the “beat generation” of 1950s, Snyder tries not to be framed by the traditional western cultures. He always tries his best to absorb the essence of Taoism, Buddhism and Japanese Shintoism. This paper will first introduce Snyder’s multiculturalism. “Smokey the Bear Sutra,” a parody poem based on Buddhist sutras written by Snyder in 1969, will then be introduced and explored in the light of eco-Buddhism. |
