| 英文摘要 | In the 1980s, a piece of wood which had been placed in the chest andabdomen of a corpse was unearthed from a Qin tomb (M14) at the Fangmatan site in Tianshui, Gansu. Both sides of the wood were painted with patterns; the front side showed a tiger tied to a tree while the back side was a six game chart. Scholars at the time paid little attention to the meaning and function of these paintings. Analyzing the unearthed object in light of the historical literature of the pre-Qin and the Han eras, this article concludes that the front side of the wood painted with a tiger was intended to prevent ghosts from eating the body, and the tiger was tied to the tree as an expression of a specific desire. In order to let the tiger guard the coffin chamber forever and dutifully fulfill its mission, the tiger should be firmly tied to the tree. The back side of the wood painted with a gaming chart implied that the owner of the tomb could be immortal, play games with the immortals, forget secular entanglements, and enjoy the games heartily. |
