英文摘要 | In this paper, the writer discusses the inseparability of language from culture, and the challenges this poses to foreign language learners and instructors. The writer argues that in the context of EFL in Taiwan, this challenge is heightened due to the distances have historically separated Chinese civilization and the West. After briefly examining the motivational founts of Taiwanese students, the writer expounds upon the necessity of developing classroom methods to engage students who may be apathetic to acquiring cultural insights during the course of their EFL studies. To this end, a method titled “Historical Episodes” is introduced as a means of imparting cultural knowledge and garnering the interest of disinterested EFL learners at the college level. A detailed delineation of both the rational and process behind a “Historical Episode” is provided, along with examples and recommendations for application in the classroom. |
