英文摘要 | This article explores the bird exchange between Japan and Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule. The discussion will focus on threes aspects: (1) an overview of the exportation of caged birds from Japan into Taiwan, and of the aviculture between Taiwan and Japan in the 1920s; (2) an investigation of what kinds of wild birds in Taiwan were caught to be offered to the Japan's Imperial family; (3) a historical evaluation of Kikuchi-Yonetarou Overall, bird exchange between Taiwan and Japan was like an unequal exchange of lives. While both Taiwan and Japan were on a relatively equal foot in terms of small birds trade, Japanese colonial rulers in Taiwan did not hesitate to use their power and send a large number of wild birds to Japan. This article discovers new materials ignored by bird researchers and history of bird researchers, and uses those discovered materials to help construct relationship between birds and humans as the subject of the bird-human history. In doing so, this article does not focus only on human awareness of birds. Knowledge about birds in Taiwan by Japanese researchers is indeed valuable yet incomplete. The article argues that museums and zoos are not the ideal habitats for birds. |
