英文摘要 | This paper aims to explore the marginalized and buried female voice in ”The Grass Is Singing” by the 2007 Nobel Prizer in Literature, Doris Lessing. In particular, this paper argues that both the colonial and patriarchal discourses play a crucial role in erasing female voice. In this paper issues on dominant narratives and marginalized narratives will be discussed to demonstrate that Mary is gradually and violently destroyed by the patriarchal society which praises the chastity and submissiveness of women and punishes those who fail the social expectations. This paper is divided into two parts. Firstly, I will examine the power hierarchies in post-apartheid South Africa which render Mary, a poverty-stricken working class white woman, speechless. Secondly, I will explicate that Mary's refusal tones originate from the fear of becoming as passive as her mother and her fear of victimization is because of her femaleness. The concluding part emphasizes Mary's little weak voice is denied by the hegemonic narratives. |
