英文摘要 | Pierre Loti (1850-1923) who is a French writer and a naval officer of French Army, has visited Japan two times, in 1885 and 1900 in Meiji Era. His several works on Japan have a big role in the 19^th century Western images of Japan.Researchers have been paying attention on Madame Chrysanthème very often, which is the best known work of Loti about Japan. But this paper will focus on Les Femmes Japonaises (1891), which is showing not only Loti's critical gaze to Japan, but also his admiration for Japanese people and culture.Fist of all, this work of Loti has not been discussed until today. Even it is not known between the researchers. Before this work, for example in Madame Chrysanthème, Loti describes Japanese as ”monkeys”. But he has a new perspective in Les Femmes Japonaises. In this work, Loti's admiration for Japanese and Japanese culture appears. At the same time we can see that he still has several prejudges too. In the other side, we will also see how Loti understands Japan`s modernization. The important point this paper aims to clarify is, Loti's image of Japan is not only one sided understanding. Since today, Loti has been criticized for criticizing Japan. But this paper shows that, he also had a big admiration for Japan. |
