| 中文摘要 | 本文藉由一隻棕狗的傳奇，探討二十世紀初反動物實驗運動於策略上之激進化現象。文章首先回溯此一歷時十年以上之爭議，並藉之分析其運動策略演變。本文指出，反動物實驗運動儘管經常被指控為一由情緒與非理性所支配之運動，但是我們若將分析焦點置於其策略理性面，即可見出其與時俱變、有意識之策略運用。此時期策略上之三大發展－媒體策略、美學策略、群眾策略－皆充分回應且利用了時代政治文化之特色乃至物質文明之變遷，包括新媒體之出現、廣告概念與政治文化之結合、女性對集會遊行文化之突破等。透過對反動物實驗運動之策略分析，我們可見出其與激進政治傳統間之密切關聯及其策略理性。 |
| 英文摘要 | The article investigates the radicalization of the strategy of the British anti-vivisection movement through the series of campaigns and events that surrounded the legendary "Brown Dog" affair in the early twentieth century. It discusses the main strategies employed by the anti-vivisection movement during this period-its media tactic, aesthetic strategy, and appeal to the masses-and viewed them as a rational response to the wider political changes and material developments of this period, such as the growth of the popular press, the political use of giant posters as advertisements and the entering of women into the traditionally male-dominated political arena. Through this analysis of the strategies adopted by the movement and the rationale behind them, this article hopes to dispel the irrational image often attributed to the anti-vivisection movement and, further, to connect the movement to the radical political culture of the early twentieth century. |
