英文摘要 | How people form and change their political preference has attracted scholars' attention for a long time. Political scientists continue to investigate what factors make a great impact on public opinion. John Zaller is one of the most influential scholars on this issue. Zaller argues that public opinion is significantly affected by individuals' political awareness and political elite's discourse, proposing "mainstream effect" and "polarized" effect to interpret the correlation between individuals' issue position and elite's discourse. The target of this research is to conduct a simple test of Zaller's mainstream effect and polarized effect, examining whether his theory is applicable to the Taiwanese public. By analyzing respondent's position on the issues of Taiwan independence vs. reunification with China, large scale reform vs. social stability, and environmental protection vs. economic development, I find that the Taiwanese public does not necessarily take the same position with political elite on certain issues. Moreover, political awareness does not make a significant impact on the correlation between individuals' issue position and elite's discourse. In short, the formation and change of public opinion in Taiwan can not be perfectly interpreted by Zaller's theory. |
