| 英文摘要 | This article examines Xie Wenjian's (1616-1682) life and thought in the context of the encounters among Confucianism, Buddhism, and Christianity during the late Ming-early Qing period. Xie Wenjian studied Buddhism and the Neo-Confucianism of the Wang Yangming School as a young man, but he was later attracted to Cheng-Zhu learning and remained a Cheng-Zhu scholar throughout his life. He was a leading Confucian scholar in Nanfeng County, Jiangxi Province but later became critical of both Buddhism and the Yangming Learning. He was also familiar with Christianity to a certain degree and had debated the merits of Christianity with some Christian friends. In this article, I will first discuss Xie Wenjian's learning experiences and his scholarly associations. This article elaborates on Xie's thought, comparing his ideas with both Neo-Confucianism and Christianity. Although I fully understand the differences between Xie's Confucian position and Christian doctrine, I emphasize that some of Xie's ideas, such as his concepts of eternity, life and death, self and self-cultivation, the eternal fellowship among Confucian sages, and his aspiration to save human beings, suggest that Xie might have absorbed Christian themes into his thinking. Xie's ideas demonstrate a unique point of view and perhaps a new development in Ming-Qing Confucian discourse. In addition, this article also discusses how Xie distinguished Confucianism from Buddhism and compares his argument with that of Liu Ning, one of Xie's friends who had converted to Christianity, to highlight the mixture of Confucianism and Christianity in both scholars' works. |
