英文摘要 | Console video games-induced postural sway and motion sickness was examined to test the postural instability hypothesis of motion sickness (Riccio & Stoffregen, 1991). Fourteen adults (aged 22.2±4.2 years; height 172.2±9.6 cm) voluntarily served as participants for this study. A car racing game in Xbox 360 (Microsoft, Corp.) was used. Participants were required to sit with their eye-height level with a CRT video monitor screen (Panasonic). A magnetic tracking system (Flock of Birds, Ascension Technologies, Inc., Burlington, VT) was used to record their postural sway during the process. The test lasted up to 50 minutes. Participants were asked to fill in the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) before and after the experiment. They were divided into the healthy group (Well group) and the motion sickness group (Sick group) according to their self-reported answers of motion sickness. Overall, 50% of the participants reported motion sick. Results of the SSQ found significant differences between the Sick and Well groups. Postural sway variability was not different between the Sick and Well groups. In consistent with the previous studies, the incidence rate of motion sickness while or after playing console video games was about 50%. Individuals, who reported motion sick, were physically more uncomfortable after the games as compared to before the game and to the Well individuals. From these results, we concluded that the postural instability hypothesis was not supported in the present study; however, individuals' postural sway variability increased as increased the playing time. |
