英文摘要 | Objective: To analyze the characteristics and burden due to mortality and hospitalization as a result of injury. Methods: We used mortality data from official publications recording the death statistics and hospitalization data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database from 2005 through 2007 to analyze the characteristics of injuries in terms of gender, age, cause, years lost from potential life span, and medical expense. Results: There were 774,107 inpatient admissions and 23,506 deaths due to injury in Taiwan from 2005 through 2007. The average number of years of potential life lost was 31.1, and the medical expense was NT 43.928 billion dollars. There was more mortality and a higher hospitalization rate for males, most of whom were aged 65 and over. The leading cause of death and inpatient hospitalization due to injury was ”traffic injury” which accounted for 58.3% and 34.0% respectively. This was followed by ”unintentional fall” which accounted for 15.1% and 23.3% respectively. The medical expense for these conditions accounted for almost half of the total inpatient medical expense. Conclusions: The most common injuries in Taiwan were ”traffic injury” and ”unintentional fall”. We should make appropriate plans for interventions in high-risk groups in order to decrease mortality, hospitalization rate, and the magnitude of medical expense as a result of those injuries. |
