英文摘要 | This study examines the length-of-turns factor in short consecutive interpreting and attempts to determine if this factor influences users of the interpreting service when they evaluate the quality of interpretation. We also examine whether users have any preference for the length of turns in a specific context. To manipulate the length factor, we designed an experiment and a questionnaire to elicit feedback from participants. The results demonstrated that users’ preferences for length significantly converge toward the medium length (15-20 seconds). The participants believed that a proper length will bring more complete and less fragmentary messages in interpretation. They also believed that these messages would facilitate structural (or topical) coherence and promote audience understanding. When we examine the quality of interpretation, however, length is not a predictor for the evaluation of overall delivery and that of, fidelity, fluency, logic and completeness. Therefore, although participants have clear preferences, such preferences do not predict the perceived quality of interpretation. |
