英文摘要 | In 1909, a medical missionary of the British Presbyterian Mission, George Duncan Whyte (1879-1923), started a Christian fellowship with a number of Chaozhou Christians engaged in the hand embroidery trade in Hong Kong. The fellowship later became a Chinese independent church. In 1947, the church was officially renamed the Swatow Christian Church. From this origin, the church grows steadily and branches out into fourteen different churches today throughout Hong Kong. Most of the people in Hong Kong are Cantonese-speaking. Therefore the Swatow Church, with its members speaking the Chaozhou dialect, was at first regarded as a peripheral body among the Christian community. However, as the younger generations of the Church inevitably mix with the local Chinese, the number of members speaking the Chaozhou dialect drastically decreases. At the same time, as more and more Cantonese-speaking Christians join in, the Church gradually becomes localized. This evolution of the Swatow Christian church in Hong Kong vividly illustrates the theme-from peripheral to central. This article is divided into four parts as listed below:1. The Chinese ethnic groups in Hong Kong and why Cantonese has become the main dialect;2. The origin of the Swatow Christian church;3. The birth and development of the Swatow Christian Church in Hong Kong;4. The localization of the Swatow Christian Church. |
