英文摘要 | The theoretical trajectory of Elaine Showalter's voluminous publications can be described in two broad categories: the female literary tradition and feminist criticism. These two central trajectories are connected to the ”biological, linguistic, psychoanalytic, and cultural” differences of women's writings that Showalter proposes in an early essay, ”Feminist Criticism in the Wilderness” (1981, p. 186). In this essay, Showalter uses the term ”the wilderness” to symbolize women’s space in daily life, in experience, and in the subconscious (1981, p. 180). Showalter is most under fire from her critics for the ”biological, linguistic, [and] psychoanalytic” differences she maintains (1981, p. 186). Yet her critics may not be aware that of the four differences, only the last feature, cultural difference, survives as a prominent factor in her books about the female literary tradition as well as in her later criticism on women's writings. Showalter calls the women's literary tradition ”the product of a subculture” and optimistically envisions both its progress and its acceptance by and integration into the mainstream male literary legacy (1998, p. 400). Showalter adopts a welcoming attitude toward activities that move away from or revise the mainstream tradition and challenge the strict line between canons and a broader understanding of literature. If, as she suggests, the first stage of debunking stereotypes and the second stage of discovering women's literature are nearly complete, and the third stage, to reexamine the implicit hypotheses in reading and writing theories, has been underway since the 1980s, Showalter now claims that women's writings and feminist criticism are across ethnicity, national borders and cultures. |
