英文摘要 | Established in the period of Kamalan Administration in Qing Dynasty, Yang-Shan College (Wen-Chan Temple), the first school in Lan-Yang area, is composed of Wen-Chan Temple and school buildings for disciples, credited with the cradle of culture in Lan-Yan area, where talents and artifacts gathered. Unable to weather the storm over the past hundred years, however, the school buildings were completely devastated and occupied, under no guard, by the local civilians, with Wen-Chan Temple still in existence. Already out of shape in its whole pattern, Yang-Shan College no longer enjoys its reputation for the foremost college in Lan-Yang area. Such a recurrent incident turns out to be a caution to the protection of ancient monuments and artifacts. In fact, the main reason for the serious destruction of ancient monuments is the ways of treating the devastated temples, dismantling them either partly or completely without deliberate consideration. Take for example Bi-Xia Temple (Ye-Wu-Mu Temple), a county-level monument in Lan-Yang area, it remains as it used to be in the main body, with gatehouses and left/right wings torn down. On the other hand, in the wake of countless violent storms, the time-honored Confucius Temple was completely dismantled without renovation and replaced with a brand-new temple made of cement, which is far from being traditional in structure, pattern, and material. Viewing this, Chen, Ho-Yuan, the senior master in woodcarving and the winner of heritage award laments the massive changes. In addition, it occurs that the artifacts kept in temples are often stolen, among which those masterpieces created by national artists and anti-Japanese patriotic artists are the targets of thieves. In this regard, this writer would like to call on our civilians in Lan-Yang area to face this grave issue and make concerted efforts to protect our cultural property. |
