英文摘要 | This article is a report of a linguistic sociological survey, which was aimed at illustrating the situation of competition of languages in the multi-lingual Taoyuan County, Taiwan. The language use was investigated in different settings such as department stores, markets, restaurants, eateries, hairdressing salons, CKS airport, train stations, parks and other public places. It was found that Mandarin is the most dominant of the languages spoken in Taoyuan. The other native languages, including Southern Min, show severe declination, especially Hakka. The traditional domain of Hakka has been invaded by Mandarin and Southern Min. No aboriginal languages were reported in this survey. The distribution of languages is correlative with age, sex, and economy. Madarin, English, and Japanese are distributed in younger, female, and higher consumptive settings; while Southern Min and Hakka are distributed in older, male, and lower consumptive settings. |
