英文摘要 | This paper closely examines, from the perspective of exam sociology, the test item involving the use of the so-called “Huoxingwen” (Txtspeak) in the 2006 General Scholastic Ability Chinese Test. This particular test item was severely criticized at the time for “ignoring the gap between students from the rural and the urban area” and for “unduly incorporating passages involving popular culture into a formal high-stakes exam.” However, this paper argues that, since candidates who lack cultural knowledge are in reality disadvantaged—no matter whether the passages deal with subjects on classical or popular cultures, the appearance of test items involving popular culture may promote high school students’ interest in reading, besides textbooks, more varied types of text passages, including of course those dealing with popular cultures. In fact, such items may eventually help to obliterate the dichotomy between "elite/classical" and "popular" cultures. |
