英文摘要 | Going against the grain of the received historiography on modern Xinjiang history, this essay explores not how the disparate peoples of Xinjiang conflicted, but rather how they cooperated. To this end, it draws on the exceptional detail provided in the writings of British observers to illuminate the dynamics of multi-polar interaction in the city of Kashgar at the turn of the twentieth century. The central argument here is that as Kashgar became isolated with the collapse of the Qing dynasty it turned, of necessity, toward greater recognition and aid between regional elites, including the city’s powerful Russian and British consulates. A significant, if short-lived, “middle ground” thereby emerged that, in its patterns of social and political accommodation, helped maintain essential order in Kashgar. |
