英文摘要 | The American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) requires all members to follow its "Code of Ethics" and "Guidelines for Practice" in an effort to upgrade professional treatments from the traditional restoration practices of the past. The conservation professional must aim for the highest professional standards out of respect for the unique character and significance of cultural property. He or she should use methods and materials that are understood not to adversely affect cultural property and its future examination, analysis, treatment, and function. Furthermore, a conservation professional's statements about age, origin or authenticity should be based on the physical evidence derived from an object, rather than on opinions, and should include an explanation that scientific data alone cannot provide definite attributions. With these principles in mind, the speaker will present scientific studies of several Chinese bronzes to illustrate the difficulties in interpreting past treatments of allegedly ancient objects. Historical and recent examples of Chinese bronzes from western collections in Boston, Baltimore, and Moscow will be shown. In contrast, a recent treatment of a monumental Greek bronze, using reversible materials and minimally invasive techniques, will be used to demonstrate modern conservation principles and practices. It is hoped that this east-meets-west presentation will elicit lively discussions and insights into shared principles and practices for preservation of metal cultural heritage. |
