英文摘要 | There are two categories in vowel reduction: reduction in quality and reduction in quantity. Generally speaking, quality reduction explains that an unstressed vowel is pronounced shorter than a stressed vowel. While quantity reduction is caused when the pronunciation of the unstressed vowel is too short and leads to incompletion of the pronunciation. The shorter the pronunciation is, the greater the difference between the stressed and unstressed vowels. There are two grades in vowel reduction: maximum and minimum reductions. In the respects of oral realization and reception, an unstressed vowel with minimum reduction is pronounced and sounds almost like a stressed one. On the contrary, an unstressed vowel with maximum reduction sounds very different from a stressed one. Research on the oral realization of the said vowel was previously undertaken in 2005. The aim of that research was to analyze the ability of Taiwanese students to master the oral realization of the reduced Russian /a/. This present research is based on a phonetics experiment. First, the materials for the experiment were collected, and then a Russian teacher recorded the material. Approximately 150 students listened to the recorded material and then were asked to distinguish the vowels with maximum and minimum reductions. As we predicted, it was difficult for the students to recognize the unstressed vowel with maximum reduction. |
