英文摘要 | The first documentary history about flamenco dance was written in 1847; however, two hundred years earlier Miguel de Cervantes already published a short novel about Gypsy life, Little Gypsy Girl, collected in his exemplary Novels (1613). The Gypsy girl depicted by Cervantes is a perfect dancer who is not only beautiful but full of wisdom. In the seventeenth-century South of Spain, Gypsy music and dance were so popular among local people that it provoked hostility from the Court, and therefore the festivals and dancing activities imitating the Gypsy style were totally forbidden. By creating a narrative of exoticism, Cervantes becomes the first novelist who witnesses Gypsy culture in Spanish history of flamenco dance literature. To emphasize Cervantes as a pioneering writer, this essay will explore three important topics: (1) Narrative structure: romantic writing and exotic imagination, (2) Historical meaning: contribution to the development of Spanish dance history, and (3) Theatricality: dance and poetry as theater construction. |
