英文摘要 | More and more people in Taiwan support it as a state separate from Mainland China since the beginning of the democratization process. It seems that the scope of political participation has defined the boundaries of state. However, people in Taiwan do not actively pursue independence de jure, which might also reflect their concerns for the uncertainty resulted from changing the “status quo” in the relations across the Taiwan Straits. Under such circumstances, this article argues that if the people in Taiwan are allowed to participate in politics in Mainland China, the paradigm of their national identity might be transformed as well. In addition, it would be inevitable for the people in Taiwan to ask for political participation in Mainland China if the economic, social and political development there promotes the Taiwan people’s renewal of identification with China. If Taiwan people’s political participation in Mainland China means unification of China by definition, without resulting in any internal institutional change in Taiwan, then the uncertainty brought by unification may be minimized. |
