英文摘要 | With the support of Chinese government, researches and historical records regarding the Boxer Movement have been rather thoroughly excavated and made available. These records have allowed scholars to produce an impressive amount of quality studies into this significant event. However, due to the discrepancies existing between different historical materials, various interpretations regarding the Boxer Movement exist but many of them express contradictory views. The article first categorizes the history materials about the Boxer Movement into six types, namely government archives, notes and diaries of the boxer's contemporary, writings by the participants of the movement, interviews, reports of the missionaries and church documents, as well as news and magazines entries, then characterizes the features of these different records and discuss their respective significance, and finally concludes by pointing out the mainstream in the research on the Boxer Movement and the shifts in paradigms, which are closely related to the use and interpretation of historical materials. The methodology of this research is comparative study. Based upon an understanding of the features of historical records, the article illustrate the method of comparison by using the examples of the Zhu Jia He Event in Zhi Li Region and Ping-Yuan Event in Shangtong Province, and explains how through comparative studies on historical records, we can reconstruct the narratives about the Boxer Movement and examine the fallacies in the previous studies. Extreme post-modern historicists, who tend to negate the reality of history, may not provide a well-grounded methodology for the paradigm of historical studies; however, they help liberate some of the prejudices on the writing of history. This article, largely based upon comparative historical studies thus may seem rather traditional in its approach, draws inspiration and nutrients from post-modern history study. |
