英文摘要 | Japanese speakers frequently use noda sentences. The first type of noda sentence has a clear context or situation, but the second type does not, therefore, it seems to appear suddenly. In fact, the second type is an extension of the first type, and the basic function of both two types is not to make an utterance directly but to refer to something about “background matter” that suites the occasion. The second type of noda sentence seems to be uttered suddenly and is not only used in dialogues but also when talking to oneself. In dialogues, speakers usually use the words ne and sumimasen at first to get the listener’s attention and means that there is something he wants to talk to him/her about. After that the speaker uses a noda sentence refer to some matter in detail. Secondly, the speaker thinks about the situation and makes an assumption and then uses a noda sentence to refer to the “background matter”. Therefore, this kind of sentence is not used in the editorial genre since the readers are not in direct physical contact with the writer. Readers are unspecified numbers, so a writer cannot make assumptions about their statements. Furthermore, in the caste of talking to oneself, such a noda sentence is used when the speaker makes an assumption about something that he/she thought might not happen and wants to refer back to background matter at the time of the utterance. |
