英文摘要 | Chihpen River is accommodated by the Puyuma, Ami and Paiwan Tribes. In early days, people of the Puyuma and Ami tribes hunted and farmed freely around the Basin of Chihpen River, on which they relied heavily for economy. During the period under Japanese ruling, the Government-general of Taiwan established several irrigation ditches in order to facilitate the rice cultivation for native people. The main economic activity of the native people transformed from shift farming to rice cultivation thereafter. However, the Han people began to move in the Basin for the sake of trades and rice cultivation. As a result, the original advantage for the development of the native people gradually changed. Chihpen River contains rich resources of hot spring water. People of the Puyuma tribe have long used the hot spring for bathing in a way coordinated with the natural environment. Somehow, after the Japanese established the Chihpen Hot Spring Public Bath and the following appearance of hot spring hotels in the flow of the river, the utility of the river was turned from the purpose of hunting, shift farming and rice cultivating to almost exclusively the commercial end. After the Second World War, the water resources of Chihpen Hot Springs were developed in such a great scale that the hot springs as well as underground water gradually dried up. The amount of water in the developed area slowly decreased, and the trees and grass was replaced by emerging hot spring hotels. Although the dikes built later served to the purpose of protecting the industries and businesses along both sides of the Chihpen River, in nonetheless deprived the opportunity for people to get back to the river and enjoy the nature. |
