英文摘要 | Drinking is a conspicuous feature of the iconoclastic literati in Wei and Jin Dynasties. It constitutes the distinguishing cultural style of the Wei-Jin period. Shi Shuo Xin Yu (A New Account of Tales of the World) doesn’t specify a category for “drinking,” however, as an important literature recording Wei-Jin scholars’ lives, words, and deeds, it is redolent with the smell of wine. Based on the accounts related to drinking that scatter throughout Shi Shuo Xin Yu, this article analyzes the iconoclastic literati’s various interactions as they socialized by means of drinking and toasting. It also explores the unique idea of and the intricate motivation for drinking in this era. Through these efforts, this article attempts to p resent the internal emotions as well as the external features of the literati’s drinking fashion, and to further understand its influence on the drinking culture of future generations. First, this article discusses the way in which drinking was mysticized: in the atmosphere of Mystic Learning that advocated abstruseness, drinking was endowed with a new value at the philosophical level, which also became an important connotation of the drinking culture of later generations. Next, this article discusses the motivations for drinking: the traditional attitude that “regarded sobriety as honorable” was now replaced by the one that “regarded drunkenness wise,” and drinking became a kind of protective coloration. Behind the same behavior of constantly getting drunk and ignoring worldly affairs, there were different inner motivations that require further examination. Finally, this article analyzes the iconoclastic literati’s words and deeds during their drinking, and the descriptions of their interactions in banquets. This not only helps us to understand the angles from which people of the time were appreciated, but also reveals an important origin of the allusions and materials in later literature about poetry and wine, and of the use of drinking to portray characters and develop plots in fictions. |
