英文摘要 | In 1862, the first year in the reign of Emperor T'ung-chih, the Hsiang army, under the command of Tseng Kuo-ch' üan, garrisoned themselves at a point on the south of Chin-ling (now Nanjing) city called Yü-hua-t'ai. This action caused the Heavenly King Hung Hsiu-ch' üan to feel so uneasy that he repeatedly ordered the Loyal King Li Hsiu-ch'eng to return to capital to provide military aid. Li gathered all possible troops and besieged Yü-hua-t'ai; both sides immediately began intensive offensive and defensive operations. The Hsiang army was greatly outnumbered, and the two forces grappled with each other for forty-six days before the siege began to break down. This campaign established the foundation of the future restoration of Chin'ling, and became a critical moment in the military campaign between Ch'ing Kingdom and the rebellion of T'ai-P'ing Heavenly Kingdom. This article will follow the course of this battle in an attempt to investigate this military campaign. In addition to utilizing archival documents and other written materials, the painting, "Suppression of the T'ai-P'ing Heavenly Kingdom," currently in the collection of the National Palace Museum, will be considered whenever possible in an attempt to supplement the history. This article will analyze the military maneuvers utilized by the Ch'ing army during this campaign, how the army was deployed; how attack and defensive strategies were coordinated with other Ch'ing units, and the morale of soldiers. Readers of this article will gain an understanding the lack of Tseng Kuo-ch' üan during the T'ai-P'ing siege of forces at Yü-hua-t'ai was not only the reinforcements, but was the timing reinforcements. |
