英文摘要 | For long time, there has been increasing concern over the harmful effects of environmental lead (Pb) exposure on human health. Traffic policemen and gasoline station workers are known to be heavily exposed to automobile exhaust that contains large Pb deposit due to diesel exhaust. This study was undertaken to evaluate whether occupation-related Pb exposure could be reduced after the withdrawal of diesel oil at a metropolis in Taiwan. Blood samples of traffic policemen and gasoline station workers from a same sampling site of busy-traffic were separately collected in 1990 and 2003, between which periods the diesel oil had been gradually replaced by unleaded gasoline in market. The results showed that blood Pb deposit was markedly higher in traffic policemen and gasoline station workers than that of their age-matched normal controls in 1990. However, blood Pb values did not differ between these two groups of subjects after diesel oil had been phased out by 2002. Our data indicate that blood Pb levels of those who had been exposed to high automobile gas exhaust were markedly reduced after the complete changeover of unleaded gasoline. |
