英文摘要 | Pamela’s writing elicits a problem in locating the term “virtue.” How do Pamela’s writings arrive at the notion they aim to evoke? What concerns most critics is the circular nature of language: How can Pamela’s writing depend on an “external” referent (virtue as existing in itself) and render an independent state of things, while at the same time this external referent is itself disclosed only through the mediation of language? This study attempts to set up a third position out of this impasse by arguing that there is a specific textual operation-the function of naming-that does the miracle of transforming the nature of Pamela’s writing and that makes Pamela an “intellectual” possessive individual. Locke’s model of property and Lord Harwicke’s ruling on the literary property right debate offer theoretical and cultural contexts for a notion of literary property that hinges on a separation of the ideal from the material. The moment of self-representation (the ideal) is also the moment of self-loss (the material). By sending her letters away and by naming her writings as “the Text,” Pamela generates an ideal that places her writings in an irrefutable status of objectivity and authenticity. Naming is an act of creation, turning chaos into harmony; it gives body to an entity, which until then is lacking in Pamela’s writings--an entity that is now Pamela’s identity. |
