英文摘要 | The literature of any age is defined by that age. This seems an obvious conclusion but it does have a deep meaning; the definitive elements of any age need not be concrete or explicit. For example, that a historically and culturally specific society, which is militant in nature, might produce art that preserves military action and heroics as inspirational as of little surprise. Literature of the ancient Greeks, for instance, claims its greatness in the epics of travel, voyage and adventure. Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, to state possibly the best known of all Greek literature, are based on the mythologies of Greek gods and factual Mediterranean wars. That these works were inspired by the experiences and beliefs of the society from which they emerged cannot be a shocking development. This conclusion is an obvious one, but there are other treads in literature that are not so superficial. The art produced during the Industrial Revolution is not so superficial. The art produced during the Industrial Revolution is not so much about the magnificence of manufacturing; rather it contends with the ways in which the industrial age changed the way we live, our experiences, and, ultimately, how the world appears to us. |
