英文摘要 | Daniel Defoe was a famous British novelist in the eighteenth century. In addition to his well-known novel Robinson Crusoe, he also wrote a great number of works on a variety of topics. This study aims at exploring Defoe's views on women in terms of his family life and marriage, as well as his works about family, marriage, and women. The texts under study include The Family Instructor, Conjugal Lewdness, Moll Flanders, Roxana, and An Essay upon Projects. Truly, the relationships among family, marriage, and women are complicated and interconnected, both socially and culturally. Moreover, Defoe's views on women's education were very progressive and worthy of investigating. I will first describe Defoe's family life and marriage, and then, study the significance of family, marriage and women education in his texts, so as to have a thorough understanding of his views on women. As a devoted man and husband, Defoe's writings were surely influenced by the women around him. Moreover, he had known and experienced the lives of the lower class people, serving as a merchant, a spy, a journalist, a pamphleteer, a soldier, and what not. In short, he witnessed and observed contemporary British society personally. I will also look into British family, marital conventions and women's status at that time and come to conclude that. Defoe's insight into women's predicaments in the context of the eighteenth century is exceptional and avant-garde. |
