英文摘要 | This paper critically examines the influential bio-politics and its consequences on the condition of life-and-death of modern human being and tries to elaborate an alternative epistemological framework to bring back the fundamental emptiness of life-and-death on the basis of Buddhist middle-way perspective. First, we examine the exercise of bio-politics and its implication to life-and-death issues. By examining the relation between the entanglement between technology and human being, we define human existence as heterogeneous mediation. Following the insights on governmentality, we argue that bio-politics divides life-and-death into the essentialized ‘life itself’ and ‘body itself’ and disserted absence of death and semi-presence of death in our collective as well as individual existence. Second, we further examine the practical consequence of bio-politics on human existence. We point out that with the dualistic life and death, in order to pursure for life and be away from death, modern human end up in antagonistic relationship between self and other, individual and collectivity. After the critical examination of the ontological, epistemological and practical implications of life-and-death in bio-politic, we propose to elaborate an alternative epistemological foundation to the issue. We adopt the Buddist middle-way perspective, especially and notions like “emptiness” and “dependent co-arising” to point out the changing nature of life-and-death and the contingent dividing line between them which co-dependents on the formation of bio-politics. In other words, the definition of life-and-death is contingent on the time-space ocndition and thus is empty of self-nature. |
