英文摘要 | Background: Gender identity disorder (GID) is a relatively rare disorder. Accordingly, only a small number of investigators have been researching this illness. The purpose of this study is to study general psychopathology and dissociative experiences of male patients with GID. Methods: We studied 18 male patients with DSM-IV-diagnosed GID who visited our outpatient clinic for compulsory military service screening. Eighteen age-matched male healthy controls were also studied. We compared the psychopathology and dissociative experiences of these two groups by using the Symptom Check List (SCL-90) and the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES). Results: We found that male patients with GID had significantly higher total SCL-90 and DES scores compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between the total scores of the SCL-90 and DES in male patients with GID (Spearman's r = 0.61, P < 0.01, n = 18). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that male Taiwanese patients with GID have more psychopathology and dissociative experiences compared to healthy controls, and that dissociation plays some role in the psychophysiological mechanism of this condition. However, in light of the study limitations, including a small sample size, lack of validation of the Chinese version of the DES, and only assessing patients' self reports of psychopathology and dissociative symptoms, our results should be viewed as preliminary. Further studies with a larger number of male transsexual patients and better diagnostic tools are needed to verify our results. |
