|In the middle ages, there are several types of poems imitating the previous ones. By focussing on the unballad (fei ylieh - fu) type of the old poetry, this article re -examinines Lu Ji's twelve poems in imitation of the Anonymous Old Poems. It first highlights the distinction between the literary tastes regarding Lu's poems in the middle ages and the Ming - Qing dynasty; while the twelves poems were commended highly in the former, their popularity dropped sharply in the latter. Hence the need for a re - interpretation. This is carried out by examining the twelve poems against the following questions: (1) what are the primordial characteristics of the Anonymous Old Poems imitated by these twelve poems? (2) what are the differences between the original texts and the imitating ones? (3) how to explain the existence of these differences? In conclusion, while textual analysis constitutes an essential part of the discussion, contextual analyses are necessary to our understanding of the initial development of the old poetry as well as its history of reception.
